| Day of Silence |
[26 Apr 2006|12:00am] |
Please understand my reasons for not speaking today. I am participating in the Day of Silence, a national youth movement protesting the silence faced by lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people and their allies. My deliberate silence echoes that silence, which is caused by harassment, prejudice, and discrimination. I believe that ending the silence is the first step toward fighting these injustices. Think about the voices you are not hearing today.
What are you going to do to end the silence?

I've turned on anonymous posting. IP logging is turned off. Now tell me something. Tell me a secret. Tell me anything. Something you've never told anyone, or just something you think I might like. Be brazen, be anonymous, be anything.

Self Injury Awareness Day - March 1st 1st March is Self Injury Awareness Day.
SIAD is a global awareness day, and yet it is not supported by any nations' governments, because it is a grass-roots idea. Somehow, in the mists of time, the date was set as the 1st of March, and organisations around the world make extra efforts to raise awareness ready for SIAD.
The color for some reason is orange. Some people wear an orange ribbon, but in the past SIAD bracelets have been worn:
- Orange beads if you self harm; - Orange and white if you used to; - White if you have never self harmed but understand.
If you agree that people should be made aware of this issue and this day, re-post this in your journal.

Stop saying, "OMG, how did so-and-so get in? He only got in because of [name of sport] or because he's [minority of your choice]. He totally didn't deserve to get in." That's fucking ridiculous. As if being a basketball player or being black makes up the entirety of someone's personality. It didn't when college wasn't involved, and it still doesn't, and it never will. Yes, it sucks when you don't get into your favorite college. Yes, it sucks even more when someone else does get in to your favorite college. But that does not mean that they, the "less deserving," used some sneaky tactic to take from you what is rightfully yours. Even, "She got a perfect 1600, she totally deserves to go there." It's not fucking up to you to decide who does and doesn't deserve to go to college. College admissions officers know what they're looking for more than you do, so get over it and shut the fuck up.
